Sin and Punishment: Star Successor Nintendi Wii Game Review

The guys at Treasure have been delivering some of the most thrilling intense action-packed games since the early 90's, games like Gunstar Heroes on the SEGA Genesis and Ikaruga (a personal favourite of mine) are just a few of the almost legendary titles released by Treasure. Now they are attempting to "wow" us with their signature run-and-gun style gameplay on the Nintendo Wii with "Sin and Punishment: Star Successor". This is a sequel to a cult Nintendo 64 game, only ever released in Japan. This is a strange choice for release in western country's but it is without a doubt one of the best decisions made by Treasure as this is one of the best shooters to hit the market.

To be honest, the story here really isn't important but it goes a little something like this, There is a girl who is not quite human that you need to protect from some bad guys who can transform into gigantic monsters, there really isn't much more to it than that.

From start to finish the game doesn't give you a moment to catch your breath. Around every corner you will find something new, exiting, and unique to make your experience feel as fulfilling as any other shooter on the Wii. The boss fights are some of the most memorable battles in recent gaming history and are reminiscent of old Japanese monster movies.

Playing Sin and Punishment is like jumping into one of those crazy Japanese action movies, Treasure have created a roller coaster ride of amazing sights and intense gunfights. The term "On-Rails Shooter" doesn't quite fit here because you can freely control your character and move him/her around the screen just as in Ikaruga or Space Harrier. The camera will rarely sit still, zooming in and out of action to create the most dramatic visuals possible. You can shoot your gun, lock onto enemies, charge attacks, dash to avoid obstacles or enemies, and melee attack. There is a great deal of variety to this shooter and the term "on-rails" really devalues what is a shooter with a great deal of depth.

There are also a number of control options available as well such as the GameCube controller, Classic Controller, and Wii Zapper but the Wiimote and Nunchuck work just fine. There is also a co-op mode were another player can join the action, however you will only get an extra cursor on screen rather than another player which is quite disappointing considering the game has 2 main characters. Star Successor is a shooter in the purest sense, there are no RPG elements such as levelling up, new weapons, new items ect, it's just hardcore shooting straight out of the arcades and it's glorious.

The game is extremely difficult and will take allot of time and patience to complete, however it's a game which feels rewarding when you do complete a stage. Even on the easy difficulty there will be a challenge for most, so there is no shame in selecting the easy mode to start off, i personally never go below normal. The game doesn't ever become frustrating or annoying due to the number of checkpoints scattered throughout stages. The game encourages you to fail and learn patterns, way's to defeat the bosses, it is essentially what you would call a "trial and error" game. The game is far too short and will last around 4 or 5 hours, on a high difficulty it can last around double that. But with such a rewarding and satisfying feeling gained from each completed stage and online leaderboards to compete with players all over the world, you will likely want to playthrough this game multiple times, alone and with friends.

Overall Sin and Punishment: Star Successor is an absolutely fantastic shooter for the Nintento Wii. The game is very short but it's also incredibly fun and you will want to playthrough it multiple times before it begins to feel repetitive. The boss fights and action on screen is gorgeous and just down right crazy at times and anyone who is a fan of on-rail shooters, although this is not an on-rail shooter, you will fall in love with this game.

Sin and Punishment: Star Successor is insanely good    9/10
